The book is well organized and covers the huge topic of Data Warehousing in great detail. If you need a reference with hands-on examples of how to get things done--this book will get you up-to-speed and on track in no time. The practice exercises are well thought-out and provide invaluable guidance towards learning a broad and difficult subject. The nearly 800 pages are organized into 20 Chapters that cover each topic in detail. Each topic has 1 - 3 Lessons with an estimated completion time. I counted 56 Lessons with an estimated time of 45 hours. Add sample questions for each lesson and Case Studies for each Chapter and I suggest you plan on at least 60 hours to cover the book. The book covers SSIS in great detail including the new Deployment model which is essential. It offers only an introduction to Data Quality Services and Master Data Services but together with the exercises, that's enough to get through installation and a few examples. The book finishes with an intro to Data Mining and some nice examples of Advanced Data Quality with DQS Cleansing and Fuzzy Transforms. Get this book if you want/need to implement a Data Warehouse. Now having said that, you will need to factor in the horrible state of the practice content. About 1/2 of the practice exercises don't work as presented. I have a good bit of experience in this field and managed to get through almost every exercise. But it was a struggle. I'd estimate that I spent at least 10 additional hours troubleshooting and cleaning up code. Much of the code is SSIS and quite a few packages (including the "Solution" packages)are blank! Some packages build on others as you progress through the lessons, so you might try jumping ahead to find some working code. Now let's discuss the sample questions and included practice tests. I made sure that I understood every Chapter Lesson Question and all 186 Practice Test Questions thoroughly. Took the test and scored 628. Bummer. The Cert Exam is nothing like the practice material provided in the book. I went through the entire book a second time and purchased another practice exam (Thanks MS for the 2nd Shot) and passed ok.If you are comfortable with this topic, can troubleshoot/debug code and/or want a great reference book--This does the job. I keep the pdf version handy for on-the-job reference. If you are new to this topic and/or looking to get your MCSA (this was the final exam for me) you might want to look elsewhere. I struggled with a rating. Clearly the authors put a lot into this book, but it was a disastrous training kit. Good Luck.
In all fairness, the last tech book I really dove into was the orange SQL 2000 Admin book (which was awesome). I read 19 of the 20 chapters of this 70-463 book (I would rather swim in lava than write application code). If I didn't know SSIS fairly well, I'm not sure that I would've gotten past the errors present in many of the lab exercises. I'm glad the authors have made some updates with corrections, but I'm pretty sure I found a mistake in at least one exercise in each of the first 17 chapters. For me it was difficult to get through more than one chapter in an evening, and plenty of times I stopped after about 1/3 of a chapter. Most chapters are broken into 3 lessons, and each lesson has 3 mostly-multiple choice questions to test your knowledge. If you are using a named instance, be prepared to have to make lots of changes when you run through the exercises. It will be much easier if you use a default 2012 instance. If you're a DBA or a Database Developer, you may want to brace yourself for many of the fuzzy topics the book will cover (pun intended). I think this is more a testament to the immature nature of many of the BI concepts and not so much a criticism of the book. In other words, you may find yourself cringing and wondering which consultant/marketer attempted to assign new industry terms that will stick and become universal in the BI world. I was also very skeptical of some of the "you should always..." proclamations in a couple early chapters.I will say that it's cool that the companion CD will install a practice exam (built by MeasureUP). My next step is to run through that a few times.I'll try to remember to update my review after I take the exam.
Money well spent and quite in line with other MS Press books (after 600 pages covered so far). It is a boring read indeed, especially the SSIS part which is the bulk of the book, but don't blame the writers for it. It is the material that has to be covered for the exam. The book is divided into chapters and lessons in a very logical and consistent way, it gives a ton of useful information, introduces it in proper order and is good for learning the technology. It would be nice if the same material could have been presented on fewer pages. I don't know if it is possible, but that would make the rating excellent. The exercises still have errors, I expected them to be fixed by now and all fixes to be included in the download. Those were easy to fix and a good exercise on its own, but still doesn't feel right. The ultimate test for the quality of the book will be the actual exam. Then I'll know if it was worth the time and effort as well. I haven't taken it yet, earning my daily bread takes most of my time and energy.
There are typos throughout the book, including the title of the book on the back cover ("Implemeting a Data Warehouse..."). At first it was just amusing, but then I realized that my copy is also missing about 50 pages in the middle, including all of chapter 12. This is the book published by the company that is giving out the certification so what are you going to do? Totally sloppy work. I guess I'll google the topic of chapter 12 and hope someone has written a blog post about it or something. In case you are considering buying this book for the content and not to prepare for an exam, only the first two chapters of this book are actually about the design and implementation of data warehouses. The rest is basically a software users guide about SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS) ETL development using SQL Server Data Tools (SSDT). If you're looking for an actual user's guide for using SSIS, there are probably better books out there. This one seems pretty sloppily put together.
