I have read many books about Chernobyl, from dry scientific texts to often silly fictional accounts of its aftermath, yet this young author has done the best job of all of them, offering a simple-yet-accurate description of how Chernobyl's RBMK reactors worked and, ultimately, how one of them critically failed. But there is much more here than a factual account of what happened 30 years ago at the V. I. Lenin power plant. Mr. Leatherbarrow shares his deepest feelings about what he encounters on his all-too-short journey to Pripyat and the plant itself. His descriptions are excellent and without pretense, and, above all, his narrative never gets bogged down. His unpretentious and even-handed treatment of the main players in this oft told story is very refreshing. And I was deeply moved by his emotional responses to what he saw and experienced; I think that I too would have wept as I left this compelling place behind. In the final analysis, Andrew put together a superbly told story that turned out to be of sufficient length to ensure that the reader "got it" without going on and on with repetitious and unnecessary details. Simply put, it was an excellent read, and I found it hard to believe that this was his first book. I certainly hope it won't be his last.

I'd like to give this 3.5 stars, not quite 4 and not quite 3. First the good: The material is incredibly well researched. The documentation of his sources is terrific, though hard to follow in the Kindle edition (not the author's fault). I was fascinated by the recounting of events leading up to the disaster, the heart-breaking stories of those who sacrificed their health if not their lives, and his impressions of Chernobyl today. Now the bad: Leatherbarrow admits he is not a writer and this proves to be true. I found myself wanting to take a red pencil to many of his sentences. He credits the staff of Reddit for helping edit the book. In my opinion, the manuscript could have used even more rigorous editing. There were whole paragraphs repeated almost word for word in different chapters of the book. His account of exploring an abandoned British installation, though interesting, was unrelated to the overall story. The nighttime stroll through Kiev (part of his trip to Chernobyl) really wasn't relevant to the subject matter either. I would still recommend this book for those interested in the Chernobyl crisis, though be prepared to get jarred occasionally by the writing and organization of the material.

I've been interested in Chernobyl for many years and finally decided to purchase a book to read about it. This is a truthfully written, well researched book written by someone not from the area where the disaster occurred but someone who had been moved enough by the topic to write something honest after visiting and researching and reading about the event for many years. What makes this more believable than many accounts of the disaster is that the author stated most early accounts shortly after the disaster and for many years thereafter were untrue and inaccurate. Most of disturbing was the Soviet attitude regarding what should have been the safety of it's citizens. Citizen safety was not a priority to the Soviet government even prior to Chernobyl. There were other little known emergency events in other nuclear plant locations in the then USSR. What was stated to the public shortly after the disaster and even years later in documents after the trial of those in charge at Chernobyl during the event were classified to the residents of the Ukraine and surrounding area. The citizens were fed whatever the government chose to tell them, and it was not the truth about what really happened. This is a great book for someone interested in reading about Chernobyl. It is technical in a few places but still easily understood. Very well written and I suspect, more trustworthy than other earlier publications on the same subject.

I have read many nonfictional accounts of this monster disaster as it both terrifies and mystifies me yet today. Yet, this account is simply one of the easiest and quickest reads on the disaster that I have encountered. I guess at 54 years old; I am living vicariously through the author's account. I find him, for a non-expert, to be very attuned and very informed having done his research well. I like that he has instilled a freshness into the subject in an easy to understand manner. I also like that he has flips back-and-forth between his longing for his quest while sharing his trek across the haunting landscapes of Slavutych, Kiev, Chernobyl, and the ghostly wonders of Pripyat. His inclusion of his photographs and technical diagrams makes the book that much more enthralling. This is a wonderful effort from a guy who appears to have footed the bill for publication of his book on his own dime.

A self-published amateur effort that does a better, more readable, job on the disaster than many professional accounts I have read. Yes, for technical information, do make use of other sources, but understand that those sources will have little of the human drama a non-technical reader might be looking for. I was doubtful of the usefulness of such a book, given that Mr. Leatherbarrow is not a scientist or engineer and does not speak Russian. I decided to give his book a read based on the recommendation of another self-published person, a retired engineer (caveat: in addition to being professionally published, I, too, am a self-published author). Making use of nearly all the translated Russian accounts, both personal and technical, he has succeeded. He makes the functioning of the reactor and its disaster very clear, and parallels the Chernobyl experience with Fukushima and Three Mile Island. His brief history of the development of the reactor gives a very good account of the decisions that set the wheels in motion that moved into tragedy. The story of the aftermath, which is still being written, is made more real by his own visit to Chernobyl and the surrounding area. If you can only get one book on the disaster, then make it this one.

The author and illustrator of Nothing Sticks Like a Shadow put a new spin on a timeless theme as two friends deal with their dissimilar statures. Elephant and Mouse try to balance a seesaw in the park, with obvious results. Along come a giraffe, zebra, lion, bear, crocodile, mongoose, monkey and ostrich. One by one they climb onto Mouse's side of the seesaw, "grunting and groaning and grimacing" as they push down as hard as they can in an attempt to get Elephant off the ground. Just as they're about to give up, a small brown beetle flies down from the sky and perches atop Mouse's nose, adding the needed weight to move that seesaw. "Every little bit helps!" declares Elephant as a crowd of animal spectators cheers. Tompert's playful if slight cumulative text gets a lift from Munsinger's amusing watercolors, which portray this assemblage of creatures as an endearing, unusually expressive lot. Ages 4-8.

PreSchool-Grade 2-A giraffe, zebra, lion, bear, crocodile, monkey, ostrich, and even a mongoose, all winsomely drawn, walk, trot, prance, lumber, grimace, and groan in turn as each tries to aid Mouse in pushing down on one side of the seesaw to lift elephant on the other. Predictably, with each new creature, nothing happens-until (and equally predictable) from overhead a small brown beetle alights on Mouse. Elephant trumpets, "every little bit helps," as he is hoisted into the air. Pastel watercolors and ink washes in Munsinger's talented hands turn this overworked theme into an endearing piece of whimsy. Clothed bunnies and piglets watch from the sidelines in a pale green park (no modern, rubber-tired, pressurized wood playground here). Repetitive phrasing, the parade of animal types, and the variety of verb actions make this a beginning language pleaser. The facial features and poses are childlike and expressive. Together again (Nothing Sticks Like a Shadow [Houghton, 1988]), author and illustrator introduce a variation on "the straw that broke the camel's back" to a new generation. This is neither as suspenseful nor delicate as Alvin Tresselt's The Mitten (Lothrop, 1964), but still a charming effort.

Ages 2-5. In a cumulative nonsense tale with its own playful logic, a great big elephant and a sturdy little mouse try to play on the seesaw. Elephant sits down on one side, Mouse climbs to the very edge of the other side, but nothing happens. Gangly Giraffe goes up the board and sits next to Mouse, but nothing happens. Zebra trots up, so does Lion. Bear lumbers up. Other creatures, large and small, join Mouse, and everyone pushes down together. Still nothing happens--until small brown Beetle lands on Mouse's head and changes the balance so they can all go up and down. Munsinger's line-and-wash illustrations, with lots of white space, perfectly express the innocence of the lumbering elephant with big pink fingernails and toenails and a pink-striped T-shirt. Kids will laugh at the gaggle of animals clutching Mouse and each other in various contortions as they groan and grimace and push and try not to fall off the seesaw. The insect as savior is an especially satisfying solution for small children, who must often feel themselves up against a heavy, immovable grown-up, on the seesaw and everywhere else. Hazel Rochman

If anyone wants to learn some phrases, verbs and vocabulary - I'd recommend this little fold-out lamenated sheet.

I purchased these for my 3 and AP students as a quick reference. It's decent and perfect for my classroom, where communication is the focus instead of grammar, as a quick guide and nothing more. It would not be appropriate for someone involved in more grammatical studies at higher levels as it is very basic in the treatment of French grammar (i.e. I wouldn't have used it in college since I tested into 300-level classes as it wouldn't have been an appropriate resource, but would've been fine for 100 and 200 level classes).

Bought this for my first year High Schooler who takes French. He loved it and put it right into his French Binder (has 3 ring binder holes punched into it). Good lamination, thick and you can tell it will stand up through the year or two of French for an active student. Today was his first day in school, his friends were impressed and want them for themselves. His French teacher praised him for a smart buy and being prepared. It also is easy to understand and put together so it's easy on the eyes as well as it covers the major things needed in french class.

I bought the three (French grammar, verbs and vocabulary)as they were recommended by both Amazon and my french instructor..These sheets fit nicely in my binder and will last a long time which is great because they have been a huge help in reading, writing and speaking for class..Would strongly suggest anyone who is going to seriously study french or any other language to buy the Quickstudy products from Amazon as they are less expensive than the school book store!

Purchased all three of these study cards after buying the Rosetta Stone program. While the Rosetta Stone was working fine, I realized that I has having issues with verbs, etc. that really were not being discussed in the first steps of the Rosetta program. These cards are great and I would recommend them to anyone learning a new language. They provided enough information to be able to clarify what I was hearing on the Rosetta program, making the verbs, tenses, etc. all make sense.

I've found these brochure style "Quick Study" pamphlets to be useful, particularly for a newish student of French. I'm about a year and a half into my studies, and I still consult them on occasion. This Vocabulary guide organizes them by sets, such as Numbers, Colors, Essential Verbs, Family, etc. I find it useful, but in all honesty, much of this can be found easily on the Internet. That said, I do appreciate having a ready guide right in front of me.

This is a good summary of French grammar, including verb tenses. However, the tenses could be explained in a little more detail for the beginning French student, so I would recommend it for the intermediate French student. Laminated 8 1/2" x 11" booklet that fits most notebooks.

I have bought this, and all the other French QuickStudy sets. Trust me, they are incredibly helpful. My professor saw them in my folder and exclaimed "oh! Those are incredibly helpful! Really good!". If my professor says so, and I'm saying so...trust us ;)They're organized nicely, with different colors per section to help with the organization and for quickly finding what you need. they fit nicely into any binder. They're also laminated with great quality plastic. These things won't get ruined, no matter how hard you may try.Trust me, they're cheap and incredible quality. You want these.

Not what I expected. I thought pertinent travel phrases in English and French. Great for a French language/grammar class. I got it for travel.
