My favorite SQL book! With great little examples.

Received in great condition

The best book I've come across for self-taught SQL.

Good for intermediate. I feel this book is good for someone who might be good with coding and/or Access, but just doesn't know SQL very well. Like any book on coding or querying, it's not extensive, but that's because they show you the methods and most of the work is doing sample querying or just getting to work. You've probably done enough SQL or research to figure out if you'll be comfortable with it already.I wish it had gone into more advanced topics, but that's not really a complaint since the author went after a certain target audience. The formatting could have also used some indentation to better show off the query logic.

I read the first edition some time ago and it was quite good. I would recommend looking at reviews for that edition to get a true picture of this book's worth, as at this time there are only three reviews for this edition, one being a one star review clearly written by an idiot or somebody with an ax to grind.

I was browsing at BN and this book caught my eye. Chapter 9 Summarizing Data has the clearest explanation of ranking functions and partitions that I've ever seen. Chapter 10 Subtotals and Crosstabs looks good as well. This was enough for me to want to add it to my library.

Easy to read and follow. Uses real life scenarios. Highly recommended.

The 2017 Tolkien Calendar recognizes the 80th Anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit. Most of the monthly drawings were done by J.R.R. Tolkien in pen and ink for the first British edition, which had no color illustrations. Because there weren't enough of the original illustrations for all twelve months, an artist named Nicolette Caven has created pen and ink versions of two of Tolkien's watercolors, Conversation With Smaug and Rivendell. The front cover illustration is Tolkien's design for The Hobbit's dustjacket, which is still used today. The centerfold contains several of Tolkien's watercolors: "The Hill," "Rivendell," "Bilbo Comes to the Huts of the Raft-elves," "Bilbo in the Eagle's Eyrie," and "Conversation with Smaug," In addition, July's artwork is Tolkien's drawing of Mirkwood, which he originally intended for use as endpapers for the book. There is an Introduction by noted Tolkien illustrator Allan Lee. It would have been nice to have had the maps of The Lonely Mountain and Wilderland included, since they were also part of the first edition, but apparently there wasn't room for them. The calendars for each month include national and religious holidays for the US and Canada, publication dates for Tolkien's books, and the phases of the moon. Each month has a quote from either The Hobbit or from Tolkien's letters.This is a nice if not very colorful calendar, but it has a serious drawback. The grids for each month run from Monday to Sunday. If, like me, you are accustomed to calendars whose grids run from Sunday to Saturday, you will find yourself constantly off by a day if you just take a quick look at the calendar without remembering the anomalous grid. That's disappointing, because I like to make my Tolkien calendar my "main" calendar for planning during the year For 2017 I'll have to find a calendar with a traditional grid for scheduling purposes and use this one as mere decoration.

This is an amazing book. I loved the Netflix series and look forward to season 2. I picked this book up to read the REAL story of John Douglas. John is a real person with real problems he had to deal with. I admire the fact he didn't hide them to make him look like a supercop. He is a man that is detail oriented and took notes. Putting all he heard together with some gut instinct, came up with a manual cops can use today to locate prolific killers and even those who may have only had one killing incident. He can be caught before he can take another life. This is what I found to be so interesting as John leads the reader through the painful beginnings of the BAU. He captured my interest and held it throughout the entire book. I bought the audio version and I'm glad I did. The reader made John come alive for me. He sounded firm, yet vulnerable, aggressive yet sensitive. If you want to know how profiling became an integral part of criminal investigation this is the book to read. I hope to read more of his books this coming year.

A compelling look at how criminals think and what you can learn about the criminal, from the crime. Your feelings on the book will be swayed by how you feel about the writer himself. He's very convinced of his skill and his personality really comes though in the writing. The only downside to this book is that the first 3 chapters are all context and background on the writer himself. Its well written and does help in a better understanding of the writer, but for a book about profiling killers its not nearly as engaging as the rest of the book. But overall quite a unique and thought provoking book.

These are interesting stories, though the story telling us a little tiring. It feels a bit self-serving, which while understandable, is grating after a while. Otherwise, the author has had some singularly unique experiences.

John Douglas is an impeccable and intelligent author. This updated version of his original is definitely worth your time!

I loved this book!!! A mixture of his life story and profiling cases for the FBI. Very close to the Netflix series, I watched right after reading. Not sure why some reviewers say he is full of himself, I didn’t get that at all. There are times you have to mention certain things because it’s simply part of the story and can’t be left out. I also saw people saying it was boring. I can only guess these people are paid trolls to leave negative feedback, or aren’t interested in behavior science because it was never boring, it was fascinating. Full of cases. I just ordered Obsession, looking forward to it!!*The book was bent up pretty bad from shipping, but that was Amazons fault and I didn’t want to have to wait and go through hassle to return. Fixed it best I could.

It is the basis for the Netflix Series of the same name based on his interviews with them. Really seems to make the case and question why do we think these guys can rehabilitated? Some were released and committed even worse crimes. And that these guys are usually made via life circumstances rather than being born this way. Great Book.

If you want to learn more about that, dive right in. If you want a very interesting book with good narration, different perspectives, nuanced view of criminal justice or other, go elsewhere.

I am trying to encourage my son to read more, and I suddenly remembered this wonderful book, recommended by my very literary grandmother at the time, which I read at about the age of 9 or 10. I ordered it for my son, but I’m rereading it first! Our son is studying about the holocaust at his school and I felt that this book is a necessary complement to the overwhelmingly depressing details of the Holocaust. This is a fantastic story of a Jewish family’s struggles with deportation to Siberia and ultimate triumph. Virtually all of them survive and the family remains together the entire time. Their exile to Siberia turned out to be an incredible stroke of good luck in the long run, though they suffered greatly. It’s such an inspirational story told with a wonderful author’s voice. I can’t recommend this book highly enough. A must read for all children and adults alike.

I read this book as a child in the 7th grade while living in a third world country, and at the time I wasn't able to purchase it so I read it in the school's library. Now almost three decades later I was overjoyed to find this book on Amazon because I remembered how moved I was by this story. One event which stood out in my mind and had helped me to bond with this little girl was how badly she wanted a pair of shoes and clothes to wear to a school event. Her family could not afford it because they were so ravished by the war. In the midst of all that poverty and destruction this girl's family recognized her need to feel normal for one night and improvised to give her this desperate wish. Very compelling story about perspectives, the danger of prejudice, the human will to survive, and the beauty of finding simple joys in life in the face of adversity. This book remains on my bookshelf as a sentiment of how far I have come and how much I have persevered. It was even more special as a mother to now share it with my child. Thanks Amazon for carrying such classics!

This is a very special book. I read it in middle school over 20 years ago and it always stayed with me. My teacher had some WWII veterans come visit us and speak with us after reading the book. Now that I have my own daughter who is 9 I bought this book and read it to her. It was just as moving, educational, and an amazing true story as I remembered.

This is a good book for young people to read of Polish Jewish history during WWII in Poland, Europe.The book is explained about how Hitler had a preconceived friendship with the Soviet Union, only to stab the Soviets in the back. It was then that the Soviets invaded Poland and took the Jewish people out of Europe as they fought the Germans in World War II. The Soviets sent hundreds of Polish Jewish people by way of railroad--traveling for months in cattle cars-- arriving at their final destination for however long that be--- in the barren land of Siberia.This story is real and personal, as the author of the book wrote about her childhood experience prior to becoming a Polish Jewish prisoner of war-- taken away from all she knew, to how she survived her exsistance in Siberia along with everyone else. She includes their community's environment(s) as it was the essence of every one's survival.I recommend this well written book for American children (especially), as we have never gone through an experience of this liking....such as the liking of those who were European Jews who did nothing wrong but to sustain sacrifice after sacrifice because of who they were, though they did nothing wrong to deserve such treatment and to be so unaware of what their futures held.

My daughter read this as a 10 year-old and was fascinated; I reread it in my 70s and was equally captivated. It is a vivid narrative of exile to Siberia from the point of view of the child the author was at the time, a kind of Russian Laura Ingalls Wilder. Anyone would be interested and amazed at how the narrator from a comfortable urban home adapted to a harsh Siberian life.

My granddaughter had this assigned for summer reading. I bought a copy to read along. It is a little rough in parts as this was a roundup of Polish citizens who were sent to Siberia for labor camps. The narrator is a young girl. Her voice is an excellent raconteur of a horrible dislocation and learning to live in deprivation.

This book was recommended to me via another book about knitting. It was somewhat difficult to get hold of and there was very little about knitting BUT what there was left me amazed. How a child could do what she did is amazing. Her graphic descriptions were heart breaking and no doubt true.

Read this story when I was a kid. It's part of the history of WWII that we don't study very much--innocent people being banished to Siberia. It's also a coming of age story that has universal themes. Now that I'm older, I resonated with the parents' points of view as well. Excellent book.
