Yet, despite this rich array of human diversity (reflected by recent research in multiple intelligences, learning styles, right-left brain dominance, etc.) Fanselow’s observation remains all too often true: we do operate within a rather range, and the rules (overt or covert) are remarkably stable. . . . For teachers, diversity has the potential to . . . enable them to discover things about themselves, their students and the process, which would otherwise remain unnoticed. ‘ . . . each rule we break provides us with another alternative rule that is self-generated and tests the validity of our preconceived notions.’ (Fanselow, 6) If we never try anything different, however small, we never find out how it might have changed things. [Those who believe diversity is] a constantly self-renewing source of opportunity can find support [in] the already-mentioned, little-known, but hugely influential Breaking Rules, which advocates ‘doing the opposite’ as a heuristic for finding ways of doing old things. This has been more recently followed up by his Contrasting Conversations (Fanselow, 1992). A heuristic is a ‘rule of thumb’ (If I do this, what will happen?) [Fanselow’s idea of trying the opposite] . . . is highly generative of new ideas. . . . Fanselow’s point, which is worth thinking about, is that if we never try an alternative way of doing things, we never know what might have happened! Heuristics are a handy way of trying new ways of doing things. Fanselow argues that it is only by systematically breaking the unwritten rules (or habits) in our classrooms that we can discover new and possibly better ways of doing things. This is indeed a powerful heuristic, and highly generative of new ideas—some of them worth holding on to. It is interesting to note that the ‘Designer Methods’ of the 1970’s and 80’s derived much of their power and innovative thrust from the application of this heuristic. Despite his fierce anger against God for letting him suffer in a communist labor camp as an innocent man and a socialist, my father, at the time a teenager on the brink of death, embraced faith in God—as he tells the story, it was God who embraced him!—and ended up a Pentecostal believer. The family into which I was born was a faith-island, an austere but beautiful and nurturing social microenvironment. With my first cry as a newborn, I learned that not all forms of religiosity are “religions” in the pejorative sense—mind-shutting and freedom-trampling cultural edifices used as instruments of social control.
 
The Pentecostal movement started some forty years before my father’s conversion, in Los Angeles, 6,318 miles as the crow flies from the camp where he, a 45-kilogram man, was condemned to carry 80-kilogram sacks on his back. Pentecostalism’s founder was William Seymour (1870–1922), a black man and the son of former slaves; he was in charge of the multiracial and multiethnic mother congregation from which Pentecostalism spread worldwide. Seymour’s faith became my father’s faith because a Slovenian migrant worker had converted in the United States and returned back home to spread the good news. Within a single century, the faith of a downtrodden black man from the New World had engulfed the entire globe, shaped the lives of more than half a billion human beings, and garnered the sympathies of prominent religious leaders like Pope Francis. Earlier and closer to home, it delivered my father from death and made him into a new man.

A mixture of script, image, and performance, the medium was particularly suited to conveying populist, emotionally compelling messages to audiences of all classes, ages, and literacy levels, making it a crucial tool in the government s efforts to mobilize the domestic populace in Japan and to pacify the inhabitants of the empire s colonies and occupied territories. With seven complete translations of wartime plays, over 300 color illustrations from hard-to-access kamishibai play cards, and photographs of prewar performances, this study constitutes an archive of wartime history in addition to providing a detailed analysis of the rhetoric of political persuasion."
